history
The Plain City village was founded by Isaac Bigelow in 1818. At the time the area was populated by farmers, many of whom were Germans.
The village also received a train station from the Columbus, Indiana and Piqua Railroad in 1851 (merged with the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad ). The main route, known as the Panhandle Route , runs from Pittsburgh to Chicago and St. Louis. In the 1920s, the station became a major cattle loading station from which the Chicago slaughterhouses were supplied.
Big Derby Creek flows through the village and has flooded the village several times. The largest flood to date was in 1959, the last major one in 1997. On July 12, 1966, after more than 50 years, the village was hit again by a tornado that caused major property damage; around 100 large oaks, some of them 150 years old, were knocked over or damaged in the Pasttime Park.
