Plan de los Muertos is located in the east of the state of Guerrero at an altitude of 261  m in the region of the Costa Chica . The place is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur in an area with Regosol as the soil type and gneiss as the dominant rock. The vegetation around Plan de los Muertos is taken up by tropical deciduous forests . The place is located in an area with a dry tropical climate that cannot be used for arable farming, but is suitable for grazing with goats.

The closest places are the Cabeza de Arroyo Nuevo , Colonia Piedra del Sol and Colonia Zacatepec, about 500 m north of Plan de los Muertos, and the hamlet of Lázaro, about 500 m further east .
