Plan de los Muertos is located in the east of the state of Guerrero at an altitude of 261 m in the region of the Costa Chica . The place is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur in an area with Regosol as the soil type and gneiss as the dominant rock. The vegetation around Plan de los Muertos is taken up by tropical deciduous forests . The place is located in an area with a dry tropical climate that cannot be used for arable farming, but is suitable for grazing with goats.
The closest places are the Cabeza de Arroyo Nuevo , Colonia Piedra del Sol and Colonia Zacatepec, about 500 m north of Plan de los Muertos, and the hamlet of Lázaro, about 500 m further east . More than 85% of the population professed Catholicism, just under 14% were Protestant. Plan de los Muertos is located in the traditional Amuzgos settlement area . The main language of communication in Plan de los Muertos is the indigenous Amuzgo language , while the majority of the population does not speak Spanish .

Plan de los Muertos is a target area of the Programa para el Desarrollo de Zonas Prioritarias ('Program for the development of priority zones') of SEDESOL . The degree of social exclusion in Plan de los Muertos was classified as “very high” in 2005 and 2010, while the degree of social backwardness was downgraded from “high” to “medium” in the same period. Whereas in 2005 there was still earth in 94% of the residential units, this value fell to 33% by 2010, and the proportion of households without electricity fell from 23% to 7%. The proportion of illiterate people also fell slightly (from 58% to 44%).
