Planetarium Medellín (official name: Planetario Municipal Jesús Emilio Ramírez González ) is a planetarium of the city of Medellín in Colombia .

The planetarium was designed by the Astronomical Society “Sociedad Astronómica del Colegio de San José” and designed by the two brothers Daniel and Julián González Patiño, both of whom are known as renowned scientists, astronomers and botanists , and after it opened on October 10, 1984, it was managed . The Medellín Planetarium was also the first in a South American city to have a computer-controlled planetarium.

It was completely renovated in 2006 and is now part of the largest local recreation area in the northern zone of Medellín. In its vicinity is the North Park "Parque de los Deseos", the Parque Explora and several large units of the University of Antioquia . The purpose is for the planetarium to be a space for promoting the scientific and technological culture of citizens and promoting technological creativity.

In 2011, with the support of Bank Bancolombia, the historic observatory was renovated again and integrated into the planetarium building. There is also a library and a museum in the entire complex.

Namesake

Jesús Emilio Ramírez González (1904–1981) was born in Yolombó , Antioquia. He was a priest devoted to geosciences and one of his main hobbies was astronomy . Ramírez González was a member of the Academy of Sciences of St. Louis, Missouri and in 1944 co-founded the Academy of Sciences in Colombia. From 1956 to 1960 he was deputy chairman of the "Comité de Sismología del Instituto Panamericano de Geofísica e Historia". The planetarium was posthumously named after him.
