Planorbarius are medium-sized, disc-shaped snails with uniform, high whorls that reach a diameter of up to 25 mm in Europe. The copulatory organ with a small penis sheath and a large prepuce (foreskin) contains two large glandular structures. The prostate tubules (canals) open bundled directly into the spermatic duct. Like all poppy snails , the species of the genus have left-wound (sinistral) shells.

Duméril's first description was brief:

“The Planorbarius differ from the two preceding genera ( Turbinarius , Syn. From Littorina and Trochiarius ) only in that they have no operculum . They are river-dwelling species. "

distribution

Both species of the genus occur in Europe, the range of Planorbarius metidjensis extends from Spain and Portugal to Morocco and Algeria in northwestern Africa.

Planorbarius was first mentioned in 1806 by Duméril in his work Zoologie analytique, ou méthode naturelle de classification des animaux, rendue plus facile à l'aide de tableaux synoptiques. mentioned with a brief description. The German professor of medicine and natural scientist Ludwig Friedrich von Froriep translated the work and added Helix cornea as a type of the genus that was monotypical at the time .
