Planta Medica is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that is published by Georg Thieme Verlag in 18 issues a year. The magazine deals with scientific topics of medicinal plants and bioactive natural substances from various sources. Planta Medica is the official journal of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA).

The Journal Citation Reports drew Planta Medica 2019 with an impact factor of 2.687 in (2016: 2,342). Planta Medica is also an officially recognized Q1 specialist journal in the area of ​​“Integrative and Complementary Medicine” and Q2 in the area of ​​“Plant Sciences”. history

The first edition of Planta Medica was published in 1953 under the editor E. Schratz, University of Münster , Germany. The first English-language articles were printed in Planta Medica in 1959 and the first online article appeared in 2001. Since 2011, Thieme has been awarding an annual prize for the “Most Innovative Paper of the Year”.
