Platyrhina sinensis is a ray from the family of the thorn-back guitar rays (Platyrhinidae). He lives on the coast of southeast China from the Formosa Strait to Hainan and on the coast of northern Vietnam.

features

Platyrhina sinensis grows to a maximum of 68 cm long, but usually stays at 50 to 55 cm. Its body disc is heart-shaped, the strong tail has two or three conspicuous rows of large thorns on its upper side. The tail is slightly longer than the body disc. On the back, the fish are dark to orange-brown in color. The center of the body disc and tail are darker, the fins lighter. The thorns are whitish or yellowish. The ventral side of the animals is light-colored, the edges of the pectoral and ventral fins are gray-brown. The eyes are small and the nostrils, which are widely spaced, are narrow. The skin is covered with numerous, in most cases very small, sharp placoid scales and thus appears velvety. Larger scales are located on the sides of the anterior body disc and on the tail. There are four or five thorns in the eye sockets and two each in the shoulder region. The distance between the two dorsal fins is exactly as long as the base of the first dorsal fin. Platyrhina sinensis can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus Platyrhina by the two to three rows of thorns on the top of the tail.

Way of life

Platyrhina sinensis usually lives near the coast in shallow water from the water surface to a depth of 60 meters. The species is ovoviparous . The embryos first feed on the yolk sac and then receive additional nourishment from the mother through indirect absorption of uterine fluid that is enriched with fat and protein. Otherwise, little is known about the behavior and way of life of the animals.
