The Players Club , actually The Players , is a New York club in the United States .

The club in the style of the British gentlemen's clubs was founded by the actor Edwin Booth , the brother of the assassin of Abraham Lincoln , John Wilkes Booth . In 1847 he bought a villa on Gramercy Park . While he lived on the top floor, the rest of the property served as a clubhouse.

The aim of founding the association, inspired by the London Garrick Club , was to bring actors into contact with other greats such as industrialists, bankers, writers and creative people from various other professions, to stimulate an exchange of views and to devote themselves to American and British theater history and art. The Players Club has around 1000 members, including the likes of Roger Moore , Ethan Hawke , Kevin Spacey and Sidney Poitier , a well-known former member was Mark Twain .

The clubhouse at Gramercy Park was built in the Renaissance style in 1844 , the interior was later redesigned by Stanford White . It contains a comprehensive collection of art and theater items and was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in December 1962 . In October 1966, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places . It is one of 116 nationally recognized New York City landmarks .

Players Club Award

The Players regularly presents the prestigious Edwin Booth Life Achievement Award , previously received by Christopher Plummer , Jack Lemmon and Angela Lansbury , among others .
