Fuck off plant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coleus comosus

The so-called Fuck-you-plant is as a species, hybrids of the species ( Coleus comosus Syn .: Plectranthus ornatus ) of the genus Plectranthus ( Plectranthus ) within the family of mint . The market launch goes back to the Swabian gardener and breeder Dieter Stegmeier († 2016) from Essingen , who made it known in the media in 2001.

Origin and description

According to the description of the variety SUMCOL 01 in the process of plant variety protection, it is a widely cultivated and feral plant in South Africa, which was recognized by South African botanists as growing there. The plant was botanically named Coleus canina "Katzenschreck" by the breeder , but after the examination it belongs to a different species. This was then called Plectranthus ornatus Codd, synonym Plectranthus comosus . This kinship group shows numerous similar species with unclear genus allocation and is therefore problematic in terms of nomenclature. Due to a recent revision, the correct name for the corresponding species is Coleus comosus Hochst. ex Gürke, Plectranthus ornatus Codd is synonymous with it. There is also the homonym Plectranthus comosus Sims, today a synonym for Coleus barbatus (Andrews) Benth. ex G.Don in JCLoudon, var. barbatus . This was described from Nepal, but also occurs in North Africa. The species Coleus comosus , on which the "piss-off" plant is based, is indigenous to North and East Africa. It was introduced into South Africa as an ornamental plant, naturalized and has since been banned from trade as an undesirable invasive species.

effect

Because of its smell , the plant is used by gardeners and house owners to deter dogs, cats, rabbits and other mammals.

The breeder claims that the effects can be seen at a distance of five meters. However, this effect has not been scientifically proven. The result of an experiment by Günther Jauch at stern TV is controversial.

Brand and Marketing

The plant is marketed by hardware stores and nurseries as a remedy against unwanted cats, dogs and rabbits in beds, green spaces and gardens. The plants are known in the English-speaking world as Scar (e) dy Cat Plant, Piss-off Plant or similar. The name "Verpiss-Dich" for living plants and natural flowers is registered in Germany and other countries as a registered trademark in favor of Volmary GmbH, Münster; also the name Scardy Cat! , Scardy Cat , Dog's Gone! and Dog's Gone in the respective countries ( United Kingdom and USA ). The plants are also marketed in Germany under the names “Hundeschreck” and “Katzenschreck”, registered as word marks for the same owner .

Rejected plant variety protection application

The variety denomination established by the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) and published on October 15, 2001, under which the variety was registered for Community Plant Variety Protection in 2001 by the breeder's legal successor , is SUMCOL 01. However, the Community Plant Variety Protection was not granted because the CPVO regarded the variety as indistinguishable from plants present in a private garden in South Africa, which are said to have been of the species Plectranthus ornatus Codd . The complaint filed by the applicant for the variety against the rejection of the plant variety protection application was unsuccessful; likewise the subsequent legal action and the subsequent appeal proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union . In the USA, however, the Sumcol 01 variety is protected by Plant Patent No. PP 13,843.
