The Plectrogeniidae are a family of perch-like (Perciformes). The five species in the family live in the Indo-Pacific and Southeastern Pacific at depths of 140 to 800 meters. The Plectrogeniidae were introduced in 1938 by the American zoologist Henry Weed Fowler . It initially only included the genus Plectrogenium and was expanded to include the genus Bembradium in early 2018 . Sister group of the Plectrogeniidae are the Neosebastidae .

features

Since the close relationship between Plectrogenium and Bembradium was mainly based on genetic and molecular biological characteristics, so far only a few morphological characteristics can be named that can be used to diagnose the family. They lack the narrow canal of the sensory system that many relatives have between the ear region and the preoperculum . There is a depression behind each of the bases of the pelvic fins. Both recesses are in contact with each other. The spines of the dorsal and anal fin are cartilaginous. Bembradium roseum , however, has no spines in the anal fin. The fish have a special muscle in the floor of their mouth, the Hyohyoides inferioris .

The four species are small and reach standard lengths of 5.2 to 11 cm.
