The neosebastidae (fish genus Sebastes and Gr . Neos = new) are a family of fish from the order of Perciformes (Perciformes). In English the fish are gurnard perch , d. H. Called "gurnard perch". Both genera of the family live in the Indo-Pacific at depths of 2 to 600 meters.

features

The Neosebastidae are similar to the scorpion fish (Scorpaenidae). Their head length can be a third to 46% of the standard length . They are usually reddish or brownish in color. The species of the genus Maxillicosta are seven to 12 centimeters long, those of the genus Neosebastes reach lengths of 15 to 50 centimeters. There are 27 to 50 pored scales along the sideline .

Fin formula : dorsal VIII / 7–9, anal III / 4–6, pectoral 18–24.

Systematics

The systematic position of the Neosebastidae is controversial. At Fishbase and the World Register of Marine Species , they form a separate family. The American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson assigns them to the scorpion fish as the subfamily Neosebastinae, but admits a possible relationship with the platycephaloidei ( flat heads and relatives).

species

There are 18 species that grow to be 7 to 40 centimeters long.
