Plesiodema pinetella is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 2.6 to 3.4 millimeters long. They are dark in color and have no hairs on the top. The front part of the body is often darker than the corium and the base of the cuneus is pale. The thorns on the rails ( tibia ) are shorter than the width of the rails and they do not arise from black points.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is common in Europe and western North Africa. In the east the distribution extends to Siberia and Central Asia. In Germany and Austria it occurs probably everywhere and is not uncommon. In many places, however, it is only incomplete and partially proven by historical finds. In the Alps, the species rises to around 1800 meters above sea level.
Way of life
Plesiodema pinetella lives on coniferous trees such as pine ( Pinus ), spruce ( Picea ) and larch ( Larix ), but occurs in Central Europe mainly on Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ), black pine ( Pinus nigra ) and in the higher altitudes in the Alps on mountain pine ( Pinus mugo ). The species is rarely found on deciduous trees. The nymphs prefer to suckle on the pollen sacs of the trees. The adults presumably feed on the plants as well as predatory. The adults appear from late May to early July, with a life expectancy of only about two weeks. They often fly into artificial light sources at night.
