Plusidia cheiranthi is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 32 to 36 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings has a light brown base color, from which a very thin, short dark dash stands out. Sometimes a pale pink over-dusting can be seen. The chocolate-brown fields at the apex and in the basal region are typical of the species . Kidney and ring flaws have a very fine dark border, the ring flaw approximately showing the shape of the number 8. Metallic shimmering drawing elements are missing. The midfield is slightly darkened. The dark brown outer transverse line is lightly bordered on both sides and runs in an arc towards the apex, where it bends sharply in front of the chocolate brown apex field and ends at the front edge . The upper side of the hind wing is colored light brown to gray-brown without drawing.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are green in color. White back and side back lines and side stripes run on the chest segments. From the fourth segment onwards, there are wide white slashes on the sides. The white stigmas are outlined in black. There are small bumps on the fourth through eleventh segments.

Doll

The pupa is greenish and brown on the back.

distribution and habitat

Plusidia cheiranthi occurs only in a few places in southern and eastern Europe. It is widespread in Asia Minor and eastward through southern Siberia to the Pacific Ocean . The main habitat of the species are steppe areas and warm, dry slopes.

Way of life

The moths form one generation per year, which can be found from June to August. You visit artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars feed on meadow rue ( Thalictrum ) and columbine species ( Aquilegia ). Even wallflowers ( Erysimum cheiri ) is called as a food plant, formerly called Cheiranthus cheiri was performed. The epithet of the species is also derived from this older generic name . The species overwinters as an egg.
