Podops inunctus is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).
features
The bugs are 5.0 to 6.5 millimeters long. They can be clearly identified by their tongue-shaped scutellum , which reaches the back of the abdomen, and by means of two small appendages on the pronotum on both sides of the head.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe from the northern Mediterranean to southern Scandinavia and the British Isles. In the east the distribution extends to Siberia and Central Asia. In Central Europe the species is widespread and not rare, but is rarely found due to its hidden way of life. It is equally common and quite common in the south and center of England. Dry to moist, open habitats are settled. The species can also be found on the banks of water in the floodplain, which is why the species is often transported with spring floods.
Way of life
You can find the animals on the ground. They are believed to have a polyphagous diet and have been found in carnations (Caryophyllaceae), mint family (Lamiaceae) and sweet grasses (Poaceae). The animals have also been found on the carrion and faeces of mammals, although it is unclear whether this is relevant for the animals' diet. Hibernation takes place as an imago , mating takes place in May and June. The females lay their eggs in clusters of six to eight on the food plants. The adult animals of the new generation appear from August. One generation is trained every year.
