Poecilagenia is a genus of the sawfly (Pompilidae). There are two types in Europe.

features

The species of the genus Poecilagenia are small to medium-sized wasps. The head and thorax are clearly punctiform. The almost flat frontal plate ( clypeus ) is short and wide and the apical edge is slightly convex or straight. The labrum is almost completely covered by the front plate. The antennae are short and thickest in the middle. The mandibles are strong and have an extra tooth. The metapostnotum is much shorter than the metanotum . The propodeum curves increasingly backwards. It is very roughly structured. The forewings have brownish bandages in the females, in the males they are transparent. The Flügelmal (Pterostigma) is large and has approximately the length of the third Submarginalzelle. The hind legs have short thorns. The tarsi of the front legs do not have tarsal ridges. The base of the first tergum on the abdomen is petiolate. The abdomen is shiny and finely furnished with microstructures. In females, the second sternum has a transverse groove, the sixth sternum is more or less rounded. The sixth tergum lacks the pygidial area and it has short, lying hair on the tip. In males, the short abdomen is shorter than the thorax.

Way of life

The wasps are kleptoparasites and steal the prey from the nests of wasps of the genera Priocnemis and Auplopus .
