Priocnemis is a species of wasps (Pompilidae). There are 47 species of the genus inEurope.

features

The small to large wasps are predominantly black in color, with their front tergites being mostly red. However, some species are completely black. The physique of the animals is similar to that of the species of the genus Cryptocheilus , but the marginal cell of the forewings is pointed at the apex and the wasps lack white spots or bands on the body. The head and thorax are finely structured in punctiform fashion. In females, the frons usually have small, unpunctured areas. The maxillary palps are elongated. The convex frontal plate ( clypeus ) is short and wide and the apical edge is concave or pointed in the middle. The mandibles are strong and have an extra tooth. The inner edge of the usually large compound eyes is slightly convergent at the top. For many species, the length of the metanotum and the metapostnotum is relevant to the determination. The forewings are more or less brownish in color. The tarsi of the front legs are missing tarsal ridges. The females' tibiae of the hind legs have a series of scale-shaped teeth and short spines, the second sternum has a transverse groove, and the sixth tergum has numerous almost completely protruding hairs at the tip. In males, the visible part of the subgenital plate is usually flat and has bristles and hairs that are important for species identification. Identifying the females of some species is difficult.

Way of life

The wasps inhabit different habitats. Some species live in forests, others prefer open habitats. The females create their nests with the help of their mandibles in existing cavities in the ground or in dead wood. The brood is with spiders from the families Agelenidae , Amaurobiidae , Anyphaenidae , Araneidae , Atypidae , Clubionidae , Dictynidae , Dysderidae , Gnaphosidae , Heteropodidae , Linyphiidae , Liocranidae Lycosidae , Oxyopidae , Pisauridae , Salticidae , Segestriidae , Tetragnathidae , Thomisidae and Miturgidae supplies.
