Cryptocheilus is a genus of the sawfly (Pompilidae). There are 24 species in Europe, most of which are found in the Mediterranean region.

features

The medium to large wasps are strikingly colored. The head and thorax are finely structured in punctiform fashion. The convex frontal plate ( clypeus ) is short and wide and the apical edge is concave. The head capsule and face are covered with short, shiny, close-fitting hairs. The labrum is partially covered by the head capsule. The mandibles are strong and most species have an additional tooth. The third segment of the maxillary palps is broadened at the top. The scutellum has at least two upright bristles around the apical area. The propodeum is increasingly curved backwards. There is a brownish band on the wing tips of the forewings. The small wing mark ( pterostigma ) is about the same length as the wing vein 2rs-m. The legs have short spurs, the females also have scale-like teeth on the dorsal edge of the rails ( tibia ). The tarsals of the front legs are missing tarsal ridges. In females, the second sternum is provided with an oblique indentation, the sixth sternum is more or less rounded. The sixth tergum has almost erect hairs at the tip. In the males the visible part of the subgenital plate is almost flat and in some species it is slightly folded lengthways.

Way of life

The wasps inhabit open habitats and forest edges. The females lay their multicellular nests in existing and further developed cavities in the ground. The excavation work takes place before the hunt, with each individual cell having its own entrance. The brood is supplied with spiders from the families Agelenidae , Amaurobiidae , Araneidae , Dysderidae , Gnaphosidae , Heteropodidae , Lycosidae , Miturgidae , Pisauridae , Salticidae and Thomisidae .
