Hermann Haupt (entomologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Haupt (born January 24, 1873 in Langensalza ; † June 2, 1959 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German teacher and entomologist .

Life

Hermann Haupt passed the exam in 1893 at the teachers' college in Weißenfels . After serving as a teacher at the village school in Jagsal near Schlieben and the elementary school in Halle, he became a teacher of natural sciences, geography and mathematics at the boys' secondary school in Halle in 1901. Hermann Haupt became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1919 and dismissed from school for political reasons in 1934. In the following years he volunteered to head the private Biological Station Bellinchen ad Oder and between 1938 and 1941 he worked at the Geological and Paleontological Institute of the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg , but had to resign for political reasons.

From September 18, 1907, Hermann Haupt was head of the entomological department of the Natural History Association in Halle / Saale. As an entomologist, he put his focus on Coleoptera and Hemiptera and devoted himself especially to the Homoptera and here the cicadas .

Haupt has long been considered the leading (and only) cicada expert in Germany. He published about it since 1910. His overview of the cicadas of Central Europe for the series Die Tierwelt Mitteleuropas (editors Paul Brohmer , Paul Ehrmann and Georg Ulmer ) was the end of the older systematics, which only used the external morphology. The French medical professor Henri Ribaut had already begun in the 1920s to use fine anatomical details, for example of the internal male sexual organs (monograph on the Cicadellidae 1952). In Germany, the Hamburg teacher Wilhelm Wagner (1895–1977) succeeded Haupt as a cicada expert, who had been revising the taxonomy since the 1930s by evaluating the internal male sexual organs.

He is a describer of the genus Poecilagenia major in 1927 and the taxon evagetes subglaber ( Main 1941) from the family of wasps .

In 1940 Hermann Haupt was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1950 he received an honorary doctorate from the mathematics and natural sciences faculty of the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . In 1958 he became an honorary member of the German Entomological Society .

The Geiseltal Museum in Halle received his collection of fossil insects . A large part of his cicada collection came to the Senckenberg Museum in 1998 via the cicada collection of Hans Joachim Müller (1911–2007), another part of his collection came to the zoological collection of the University of Halle-Wittenberg ( Hymenoptera ), the State Museum for Animal Science in Dresden and the Erfurt Natural History Museum.
