The Pointe des Espagnols

The Pointe des Espagnols (Bret. Beg ar Spagnoled ) is a cape on the Crozon Peninsula (Bret. Kraozon ) in the Finistère department in Brittany . It forms the northernmost point of a small peninsula belonging to Crozon, on which the place Roscanvel (Bret. Roskañvel ) lies and which separates the bay Rade de Brest (Bret. Morlenn Brest ) from the Atlantic Ocean , which gives the Cape a special strategic importance results. The Goulet de Brest (Bret. Mulgul Brest ), the strait that is dominated by the cape and through which the port of Brest can be reached by ships, has a width of only 2 km, with the with directly opposite the cape Pointe de Portzic (Bret. Beg Porzhig ) (on the western outskirts of Brest) is provided with a lighthouse . The strait is secured by a series of bastions, one of which is right on the Pointe des Espagnols. Even less spectacular, there are beautiful views of Cape Pointe de Penhir, around 10 km southwest, and the city of Brest, directly opposite, to the northeast.

The name is explained by the fact that the Spanish landed here in 1594 and forced the residents of Roscanvel to build a small fortress.
