The polder Leer is a relief polder in the Lower Saxony town of Leer and the municipality of Westoverledingen in the district of Leer .
The approximately 135 hectare polder is located south of the Leda between the federal highway 70 and the railway line from Rheine to Norddeich Mole, known as the Emsland line . To the south it borders on a garbage dump.
The polder was built in 1956/57 after the Leda barrage was built, in order to be able to temporarily store excess headwater of the Leda when the barrage was closed. The polder belongs to the Leda Jümme Association . It has around 3.2 million m³ of storage space. The polder is connected to the river via an inlet and outlet structure about 150 meters above the Leda barrage and an old arm of the Leda behind it , which merges into the polder canal.
The areas of the polder are characterized by grassland , which is used for agriculture. The grassland is crossed by several ditches . There are also other bodies of water that are surrounded by fallow land . Here, as well as in the area of the dykes, there is some wood growth.
Parts of the body of water in the polder are used for fishing . The southern part of the polder canal is designated as a spawning and sanctuary. It is also not allowed to fish in the trenches. With their diverse underwater vegetation, they serve young fish as a habitat.
