Police Prefecture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A police prefecture ( French Préfecture de police ) is a police authority in France , which is roughly comparable to a police headquarters in Germany or a Questura in Italy. However, only the Paris and Marseille metropolitan areas have police prefectures.

The Police Prefecture's geographical area of responsibility can extend over one or more departments . The Police Prefecture is headed by the Police Prefect (Préfet de police) .

Until 2012 there was only one police prefecture in France, namely the police prefecture of Paris , founded in 1800 , whose area of responsibility includes the city of Paris and - in some cases - the directly adjacent departments (Petite Couronne) .

Since 2012, the Bouches-du-Rhône department has also had a police prefecture with the city of Marseille . The areas of responsibility and hierarchical classification of the Bouches-du-Rhône Police Prefecture are not identical to those of Paris.

Police prefecture and police prefect are not to be confused with the institutions of the prefecture and the prefect in each department and at regional level .
