The “Polish” Catholic Church in Irkutsk

The Polish Church in Irkutsk with the patronage of the Assumption of Mary is a neo-Gothic church in the capital of the Irkutsk Oblast of the same name on Kirov Square near the Church of the Savior and the Cathedral of the Apparition of God .

The first Catholic church was built of wood in 1825 and fell victim to the great fire of Irkutsk in July 1879. The brick building was built by Poland from 1881 to 1883 on the site of the wooden church. The new church was consecrated on December 8, 1884 and served as a place of worship, among other things after the January uprising of 1863/64, for exiles like Benedykt Dybowski . The neo-Gothic architectural style was chosen to make it recognizable as a Catholic church alongside the neighboring Orthodox domed church buildings.

The church was designed by the Polish architect Jan Tamulewicz. The interior decoration was created by the Polish artist Wojciech Koperski. In 1896 the church received an American harmonium.

The building was used as a place of worship until 1938. In 1978 it was reopened as a concert hall. It was equipped with an organ from the Potsdam company Schuke . Since Christmas 1990, in addition to organ concerts, the church has again been used for worship by Irkutsk Catholics. Main church but in 2000 on the west side of the Angara near the Technical University completed Cathedral Immaculate Heart of Mary of the Diocese of Irkutsk .
