Adult Education Center in Stöbergasse

The VHS polycollege is the oldest and largest adult education center in Vienna . The main location is at Stöbergasse 11–15 in the 5th Viennese district Margareten .

history

On January 22nd, 1887, the “Vienna People's Education Association” was founded as a branch for Vienna and the surrounding area of the “General Lower Austrian People's Education Association” by Eduard Leisching and others. The aim was described in the call for founding:

"... to fill in the gaps left by schools in popular education and thereby strengthen the present and especially the future generation in the struggle for existence."

Apart from the establishment of several library offices , the so-called free reading offices , spread across Vienna , the association organized lectures on various scientific, but also general and vocational topics. Since there were no separate rooms available for lectures, these were moved to other suitable locations, such as B. the old town hall in the Wipplingerstraße in the 1st district .

From 1909 to 1911, thanks to an inheritance from Emil Ritter, the people's education center was built in Stöbergasse in favor of the association. The house was equipped with the latest technology and even had a small observatory on the roof. Due to the availability of sufficient space, the range of lectures and events was expanded, so for the first time artistic courses were included in the program.

From 1912 to 1914 Robert Meyer was President of the Vienna People's Education Association.

Under the Nazi regime , the people's education association was temporarily dissolved in 1938, but the house in Stöbergasse was continued as a people's education center for the spread of National Socialist ideology. After the end of the war, the damaged building was restored and a new educational program was offered to the population. At this time, the name “Volkshochschule Margareten” for the Vienna People's Education Association was established.

In 1975 the house was torn down to make way for the new "Margareten Education Center", which opened in 1978. In 1981 the Stöbergasse film house opened , and from 1994 the Margareten adult education center appeared under the name “polycollege”. Nevertheless, the VHS polycollege is still simply called “Die Stöbergasse” by many Viennese.

Since 2008, the VHS polycollege / Margareten is no longer supported by the Wiener Volksbildungsverein, but is part of the non-profit "Wiener Volkshochschulen GmbH", which includes all Viennese adult education centers and their specialized facilities and was set up this year as part of the extensive restructuring of Viennese adult education.
