Robert Meyer (lawyer)

Robert Meyer (born January 8, 1855 in Vienna ; † January 10, 1914 there ) was an Austrian lawyer , economist and politician . In 1911 he was Austrian Finance Minister .

Life

Born the son of a bookseller , Meyer studied law and political science as well as economics in Vienna and Berlin after attending high school in Vienna . During his studies in 1873 he became a member of the Vienna fraternity Braune Arminia . In 1877 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD and joined the Lower Austrian Finance Directorate.

In 1884 he went to the Ministry of Finance and became tax inspector for Lower Austria . In 1884 he also became a private lecturer in finance , economics and statistics at the University of Vienna , and from 1885 to 1895 he was a professor at the Vienna Commercial Academy . In 1888 he became a private lecturer for the whole of political economy . From 1890 to 1900 he was a professor at the Oriental or Consular Academy in Vienna, in whose reorganization he was involved in 1898. In 1891 he became finance advisor and associate professor , in 1896 ministerial advisor extra statum. In 1893 he became deputy chairman of the International Statistical Institute and organized its 14th conference in Vienna. In 1899 he became section head in the Ministry of Finance and head of the section for direct taxes . From 1901 to 1914 he was honorary professor at the University of Vienna. In 1909 he became a Privy Councilor . In 1910 he resigned from the Ministry of Finance and became President of the Central Statistical Commission . In this capacity he carried out the 1910 census . In 1911 he became Austrian Finance Minister, but resigned in the same year. He became Vice President of the State Examination Commission for Political Science and from 1912 to 1914 he was President of the Vienna People's Education Association . He was also the deputy chairman of the German Statistical Society in Breslau .

He wrote numerous scientific papers and numerous articles in the concise dictionary of political science and in the Austrian state dictionary . He worked for the magazine for economics, social policy and administration . He is considered to be the creator of modern financial statistics in Austria.
