Eduard Gustav Adolf Emerich Leisching (born November 26, 1858 in Vienna , Austria , † December 7, 1938 in Vienna) was an Austrian art historian and director of the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Eduard Leisching was born as the son of the businessman Eduard Leisching and Antonie Leisching, nee Gotze born. His brother Julius Leisching also gained importance as a museum director and author. His great-great-grandfather Karl Gottlob Leisching enjoyed a great reputation as superintendent in Langensalza, Thuringia . The family also includes the German painter Friederike Leisching , who became famous for her portraits of Matthias Claudius . His brother Julius Leisching was an architect and director of the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum .

In 1886 he married Adele Margulies from Rastnig in Styria . He had two children with her, but she died in 1900. Eight years later he married Hedwig Bunzel, widowed Singer, from Prague -Bubna. She already brought two children into the marriage and gave birth to Eduard Leisching two more children.

Live and act

1908 Leisching was kk Regierungsrat . In 1909 he became director of the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. The construction of this museum was an important part of his life's work.

In addition, he devoted himself to the establishment of popular education. In 1887, for example, he founded the Vienna People's Education Association. Among other things, the emergence of Urania goes back to this work . He also wrote several works on Austrian art history.

After a long suffering, Eduard Leisching died on December 7, 1938 and was consecrated and buried in the Evangelical Cemetery in Matzleinsdorf .

The Eduard-Leisching-Hof in the Margareten district of Vienna bears his name. Furthermore, Leischinggasse in the 14th district of Penzing has been named after him since 1949 .
