Julius Eduard Josef Leisching (born August 7, 1865 in Vienna ; † May 25, 1933 there ) was an Austrian architect and director of the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum (SCMA) from 1921 to 1933 .

family

Julius Eduard Josef Leisching was born as the son of the businessman Eduard Leisching and Antonie Leisching, nee. Gotze born. His father came from a respected family from Langensalza , the mother was a native of Leipzig . The great-great-grandfather Karl Gottlob Leisching was superintendent in Langensalza. The family also includes the painter Friederike Leisching , who is best known for her portraits of the family of Matthias Claudius . Brother Eduard Leisching also achieved great fame as an art historian and director of the Museum of Applied Arts . In 1894 Julius married Mathilde Benedikter, who was born in Vienna.

Life

Leisching studied architecture at the Vienna Technical University , then stayed in Dresden from 1885 to 1887 for further technical and artistic training , then worked as an architect in Vienna, but soon turned to the study of the old arts and crafts and worked in this field a name.

At the age of twenty-eight he was appointed director of the Moravian Trade Museum (later Archduke Rainer Museum of Art and Trade) in Brno . He stayed in this position for almost 30 years until 1921.

In 1921 Julius Leisching was appointed director of the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum , now the Salzburg Museum , which he directed until his death in 1933. His grave is at the Salzburg municipal cemetery .
