Erich Marx (museum director)

Erich Marx (born February 21, 1947 in Graz ) is a high school teacher with a doctorate in history and was director of the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum from July 3, 2000 to November 30, 2012 .

Life

Erich Marx attended the Stiftsgymnasium in Lavanttal from 1957 to 1965 . In 1965 he passed the Matura with distinction. From 1965 to 1972 he studied history, ancient history, geography and art history at the universities of Graz and Salzburg . After his marriage in 1968 he moved to Salzburg. Between 1971 and 1974 he was AHS teacher at the Bundesrealgymnasium and the HTBL in Wels . In 1973 he graduated as Dr. phil. with the dissertation Das Salzburger Vizedomamt Leibnitz (under the doctorate father Hans Wagner ). In 1974 he started his service in the municipal administration of the city of Salzburg, 1979–1982 he acted as managing director of the regional association for the city of Salzburg and surrounding communities, from 1988 to 2001 he was head of the archive of the city of Salzburg and from 2000 to 2001 head of the statistical office.

Working as a museum director

From July 3, 2000 to November 30, 2012, Marx was director of the "Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum (SMCA)", which was renamed the "Salzburg Museum" from May 1, 2007 under his direction and has new accommodation in the New Residence found. The glockenspiel was restored in 2011 and the panorama museum with a panorama picture of the city of Salzburg and its surroundings was set up by the landscape painter Johann Michael Sattler . In 2012 the Hallein Celtic Museum was assigned to the Salzburg Museum.

Under his aegis, paintings by Helene von Taussig, expropriated by the National Socialists and later murdered in the Izbica ghetto, were restituted to her heirs or bought for the Salzburg Museum. He advised the cultural department of the state of Salzburg on art purchases, so that pictures have now been hung and objects have been set up for the state's offices and meeting rooms.

During his active service, Erich Marx took on a variety of cultural (e.g. member of the board of the "Association of Austrian Archivists (VÖA)", 1997–2000; Vice President of the "Museum Association Austria", 2002–2012; member of the advisory board of the Bavarian State government for the new “Museum of Bavarian History”, 2009–2011) and political functions (e.g. FPÖ municipal council of the state capital Salzburg, 1981–1992; member of the board of trustees of the Salzburg Old Town Maintenance Fund, 1990–1992). After his retirement he was appointed special representative of the State of Salzburg for the museum project DomQuartier Salzburg .
