Polymele (daughter of Phylas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Polymele ( Greek  Πολυμήλη "the herd kingdoms ") is a figure in Greek mythology .

According to Homer , Polymele was the daughter of Phylas from Phthia , a Myrmidon . She was a servant of Artemis and one of the most beautiful dancers in the choir . When she saw her on the occasion of a festival for Artemis, in which Polymele took part as a cult dancer, Hermes fell in love with the beautiful singer, hurried to her room at night and fathered Eudorus with her , one of the five military leaders of the Myrmidons in the Trojan War and in the battle for the ships of the Greeks should be killed by Pyraichmes .

After Eudorus was born, Polymele married Echekles , the son of Aktor , who took her with him to his homeland, while Eudoros was loved and raised like his own son by his grandfather Phylas.

Like her son Eudorus, “the giver of good gifts”, the “herd-rich” Polymele fits into the framework of the multifaceted veneration of Hermes, who was also seen in particular as a herd god.
