Polystichum imbricans ( English narrowleaf swordfern, imbricate sword fern ) is a fern species from the worm fern family.
Distribution and ecology
It is native to western North America from British Columbia to southern California , where it occurs in rocky habitats on the coast as well as inland in mountainous regions and their foothills.
description
The species has several upright straight or lanceolate fronds up to 80 centimeters long. Each frond has numerous overlapping, sometimes twisted lobes 2 to 4 centimeters long. The lobes have serrated edges.
Systematics
Numerous hybrids occur in this species, some of which are fertile and are considered to be separate species, such as Polystichum californicum , the hybrid with P. dudleyi .
