List of apple varieties

The Pomeranian Krummstiel is a regional apple variety from Pomerania and was formerly the main variety in Western Pomerania. The apple variety was first described by Ferdinand Jühlke in 1856 and probably originated on the island of Rügen before 1800 .

description

It is medium to large in size, firm, fine-celled, sufficiently juicy, with sweet and sour, yellowish white flesh. The shell is striped red and yellow. A typical distinguishing feature of this variety, from which it also gets its name, is the "crooked stem" that protrudes from the stem pit.

The royal horticultural inspector Ferdinand Jühlke described the apple variety as follows: “The crooked stalk, also known as the Roman apple , which adorns the poorest Kathenmann's garden in New Western Pomerania and on Rügen and is in turn cherished and cared for in those rich gardens with finer types of fruit: it deserves one in northern Germany so greater and more general dissemination than it seldom fails and the effort invested in its maintenance is very well worth it. "

use

The Pomeranian Krummstiel is ready to be picked from September to October. It is ripe for consumption from October to February. The variety can be used for juice, applesauce, jelly, for distillation but also for consumption raw. It is considered a winter apple and used to be a main variety in Western Pomerania and can still be found regionally there today.
