features

The pompadour parakeet reaches a size of 45 cm and has a wingspan of approx. 230-258 mm. The coloring of the plumage is the same in the cock and hen, the only difference is that the upper beak is smaller in the female. The plumage on the face is brown-red to blackish, the head is cherry-red, the plumage in the neck with the blue band is very variable in its extent. The tail feathers are blackish on the underside and blue-greenish on the top. The eyes are surrounded by black circles under the eyes that are naked and narrow. The irises of the birds are yellow to orange-red. The parakeet's beak is black and its feet are gray.

The call of the pompadour parakeet is a harsh, high-pitched scream that is repeated once or more.

Way of life

The pompadour parakeets live alone, in pairs or in small groups outside of the breeding season . Their flight is similar to that of birds of prey and common ravens, after flapping their wings they glide for a distance. In their homeland they mainly eat berries, fruits and caterpillars, and they also fly to cultivated areas to feed on fresh, milky corn on the cob or bananas.

nutrition

The parakeets feed mainly on mangoes , papayas , bananas , various other fruits , berries and seeds.

Reproduction

The breeding season of the Pompadour Parakeets begins in February. The females lay 3–4 eggs in their nests and incubate them for about 24 days. The chicks spend 63 days in the nest after hatching. They differ from adult birds by their brown irises and their not yet completely black beak.
