The road bridge Pont de Bac de Roda or Pont Calatrava connects the districts of Sant Andreu and Sant Martí in the east of Barcelona. The planning engineer and architect of the bridge is Santiago Calatrava . This striking bridge is one of the first works by the now established architect and was part of the presentations on the occasion of the 1992 Summer Olympics . It was built from 1985 to 1987.

location

The bridge connects the street Bac de Roda in the southern district of Sant Martí with the street Felip II in northern Sant Andreu and crosses the tracks of regional trains that lead from the city center towards the Nus de la Trinitat motorway roundabout . To the southeast of the bridge is the Bac de Roda metro station on line 2 of the Barcelona metro.

construction

The roadway is designed as a prestressed concrete structure, which is supported by supporting suspension bridge structures attached to the side. The suspension bridge part is made of steel-concrete composite construction, with the top chord at all 4 corners of the free-standing bridge abutments flowing smoothly into stairs. The bridge was built entirely with light-colored building materials, the paving in the pedestrian area is made of ceramic tiles. The railings are made of stainless steel. At night the bridge is illuminated indirectly so that you can pass it without glare. In the area of the bridge there are none of the usual street lighting by lanterns.

meaning

Although the structure is a completely normal road bridge without any constructive superlatives, it is visited by numerous tourists and is often mentioned in the relevant literature. Along with the Torre de comunicacions de Montjuïc , which Calatrava also designed and calculated from 1989–1991, as well as the Torre de Collserola by Norman Foster and the Torre Agbar by Jean Nouvel, it is an important object of modern architecture in Barcelona.
