Michael Stein (journalist)

Michael Stein (born February 26, 1962 in Bochum ) is a German journalist who specializes in science and technology. He works for radio, television, print and online media.

Life

Michael Stein completed his school education in 1981 with the Abitur at the Goethe School in Bochum. He studied law at the Ruhr University in Bochum until 1985 and then completed his internship at the Data Becker publishing house . Since then, Stein has been working as a journalist. Since 2004 he has also been studying Protestant theology at the Wuppertal / Bethel Church University and at the Ruhr University in Bochum, parallel to his journalistic work .

Michael Stein was editor from 1985 to 1988 , later head of hardware department at the computer magazine Data Welt (later: PC Praxis ). In 1988 he founded an editorial office.

In 1987, Stein helped develop the first computer magazine on the radio for NDR and was then also active as an author and presenter . He moderated call-in programs for NDR radio on topics related to computers and technology and was involved in the conception, realization and moderation of computer-related programs in the NDR's children's program . In 1994 he created the radio series “Die Bitmanns” for NDR, an entertaining radio soap that also conveyed basic computer knowledge. The series was broadcast by NDR, SWR and WDR . Stein designed the computer magazine “Welt am Draht” ( SWR2 ) for the SWR and worked as an author and presenter for the program. For the NDR he moderated the radio science magazine Logo .

He was an author for Stern , Tomorrow and Macwelt as well as a columnist for Spiegel Online . In 2007 and 2010 he worked as an editor in the editorial group Science, Environment, Technology at WDR. In 2013 he developed his own portal Fragdenstein.de , where, under the motto “Questions and answers for a better life with technology”, technical topics from the fields of computers, internet, mobile communications, audio / video, household, care and leisure are treated journalistically. Stein reports weekly in the Computer Service on WDR5 on topics related to computers and the Internet.

Michael Stein published the reference book Atari ST for beginners in 1986 . The digital model railway appeared in 2005 .

honors and awards

  • 2014 Journalist Prize for Computer Science in the “Radio” category for the WDR radio feature E-Mail and the detectives .
