The Pont Camille-de-Hogues is a reinforced concrete arch bridge over the Vienne in Châtellerault in the French department of Vienne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region .

By François Hennebique designed bridge is considered the first major reinforced concrete bridge not only in France but also around the world, even if the first reinforced concrete bridge in 1875 by Joseph Monier in the garden of the castle Chazelet in Saint-Benoît-du-Sault in the Indre built and companies Wayss & Freytag was due to the acquired Monier patents already created a large number of small reinforced concrete bridges.

description

The 144 m long bridge has three flat arches with spans of 40 m + 50 m + 40 m. On the fixed arches, small supports with a cross section of 20 cm × 20 cm support the elevated 8 m wide bridge panel. The pillars are connected to the bridge panel with arched extensions, which cantilever on both sides. All elements of the bridge, i.e. pillars, arches, elevations and the bridge panel were made of reinforced concrete. The merging of the arches with the bridge panel allowed a very low construction with an arch thickness of only 70 cm at the apex.

history

The residents' demands for a bridge to the arms factory (also called Manufacture ) on the riverbank led to a tender in 1897, in which the price of FF 175,000 offered by Hennebique for a reinforced concrete bridge was about a quarter below that of the competition for a steel bridge. After the engineer from the bridge and road construction administration had given the reinforced concrete bridge a positive rating, the municipal council and later also the management of the bridge and road construction administration decided in favor of this construction method, so that the mayor Camille de Hogues placed the order for the construction on December 6, 1898, Hennebique the reinforced concrete bridge granted. Construction of the foundations began in August 1899 and the bridge was completed in December of the same year. After the remaining work and extensive stress tests including the crossing by 250 in lockstep marching soldiers, the bridge was passed in September traffic and solemnly named on November 16, 1900 Pont de la Manufacture opened. It was only named in 1919 after the mayor who commissioned its construction.

As early as 1902, defects in the concrete pavement of the roadway due to the cement had to be repaired. Cracks later appeared, the rehabilitation of which lasted until 1910. In 1930 renovation work became necessary due to its use. During one of the renovations, an asphalt surface was applied to the bridge board. The bridge is one of the few bridges that were not destroyed in World War II. It was placed under monument protection on November 22, 2002 as Monument historique .

Extensive renovation work has been carried out since 2004, especially to remove damage to the concrete caused by carbonation .
