The Pont Jacques-Cartier is a five-lane road bridge in the Canadian city of Montreal . It crosses the St. Lawrence River and, as part of the inner-city Highway 134, connects the metropolis on the Île de Montréal with the city of Longueuil on the south bank . In the middle of the river it leads over the Île Sainte-Hélène , which can be reached from the bridge by means of side ramps. The bridge was originally called Pont du Havre (English: Harbor Bridge ) and was named after him on September 1, 1934, in honor of Jacques Cartier and the 400th anniversary of his voyage on the Saint Lawrence River.

history

Discussions about a new bridge in Montreal began in 1874 to relieve the then only bridge connection Pont Victoria over the Saint Lawrence River. It is a railway bridge dating from 1860 that still exists today. Other connections across the river were only possible with the help of ferries. The official decision to build the bridge was not made until 1924.

The steel truss bridge designed by Philip Louis Pratley follows the structural concept of the Québec Bridge as a cantilever or Gerber girder bridge . Architecturally, it is the model of the Story Bridge in Brisbane , Australia , which was completed in 1940. The Dominion Bridge Company began construction on the Pont Jacques-Cartier in 1925 and completed it in 1930. After the bridge was opened to traffic on May 14th of the same year, an inauguration ceremony followed on May 24th. The bridge was originally intended for tram traffic. However, the tracks that had already been built were never used, so that between 1956 and 1959 the bridge was expanded for road traffic. During this work, two Bailey bridges were installed so that traffic could continue to flow unhindered.

From its opening until 1962, the Pont Jacques-Cartier was subject to tolls. The toll booth was on its southern ramp. Today the premises are home to an office of Transport Canada , which maintains the bridge. During 2001/2002 the road surface was completely renewed and the hard shoulders widened to 2.40 meters and a cycle path was built. In 2004, special barriers were installed to protect against suicides. Until then, there had been an average of ten suicides a year.

A total of 35.4 million vehicles ran in the 2006/2007 season.

description

The Pont Jacques-Cartier is connected to the road network via a 594.36 m long ramp in the north and a 1502.66 m long ramp in the south. Their field widths are 128.00 m + 334.35 m + 128.00 m; the suspension beam is 115.35 m long, the main bridge a total of 590.35 m.

At the four highest points of the framework there are ornaments that resemble the Eiffel Tower .
