The Pont d'Arcola is an arch bridge made of wrought iron with a range m of 80 s. Twelve wrought iron girders form the bridge arch. The 20 m wide bridge deck is divided into a total of 12 m wide carriageways and 4 m wide sidewalks each. It consists of 1120 tons of wrought iron.

history

Since 1828 there have been at the site of the present bridge is a suspension bridge for pedestrians under the name Pont de l'Hôtel-de-Ville with a triumphal arch trained pylon . In memory of an event of the July Revolution of 1830 , it was given the name Pont d'Arcole : on July 28, the people streamed over the bridge and besieged the town hall. The Swiss Guard opened fire on the bridge. A young man wanted to cheer the crowd and shouted: “En avant! Si je meurs, je m'appele d'Arcole! " (German: "Up, forward! When I die, my name is d'Arcole!") He was fatally hit. It is unknown who he was and what his real name was.

Soon the increasing traffic made it necessary to build a larger bridge. It was therefore built between 1854 and 1856 according to plans by the architects Alphonse Oudry and Nicolas Cadiat . The construction costs amounted to 1.15 million francs . The Pont d'Arcole was the first Parisian bridge without pillars. It is also made entirely of wrought iron instead of cast iron , making it one of the very first wrought-iron arch bridges.

In 1889 minor changes were made. On January 22, 1871, violent clashes between demonstrators for the commune and the National Guard broke out on the bridge, with corresponding damage to the bridge.

In 1994 and 1995 the bridge was extensively renovated.
