The Pont de Cassagne or Pont Gisclard is a cable-stayed bridge on the Ligne de Cerdagne over the River Têt in the French department Pyrénées-Orientales .

history

From 1903 to 1910, the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi under the direction of Jules Lax built a meter-gauge railway line from Villefranche-de-Conflent to Bourg-Madame . Entreprise Arnodin of Ferdinand Arnodin built for it in the years 1905 to 1909 at kilometer 24.252 a cable-stayed bridge, designed by Albert Gisclard from 1896. The bridge was taken on July 18, 1910 in operation and in 1994 Monument Historique explained.

Construction

The bridge has a total length of 253 meters and spans the valley of the Têt at a height of around 80 meters. The two brick pillars of the bridge are 151 meters apart on the opposite mountain slopes and are 32 and 28 meters high. On each of these there are 30 meter high steel pylons. The steel cables were manufactured by the Arnodin company. A special feature is that the upper stay cables extend far beyond the middle of the bridge and thus overlap.

Railway accident on October 31, 1909

On October 31, 1909, the train escaped during the load test and derailed. Six people died in the railway accident, including three members of the Corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées , the section head of the Chemins de fer de l'État , the chief fitter of Entreprise Arnodin and the designer of the bridge Albert Gisclard. A sticker on national road 116 commemorates this accident . In addition, the bridge in memory of Albert Gisclard is also called Pont Gisclard .
