The Pont du Diable ( German : Devil's Bridge ) in the southern French municipality of Olargues , Occitania region , Hérault department , is a single-arched stone bridge that spans the Jaur River .

history

The construction of the bridge towards the end of the 12th century took place at a time when the municipality was slowly gaining importance due to its favorable location between Toulouse and Nimes . Unfavorable local conditions and large financial expenditures, which made the construction of the bridge a risk, made the citizens of Olargues believe in the help of the devil in the construction of the bridge. Since the help of the devil, according to the legend, could only be achieved with a ruse, the joy of the success of the building and the conquering of the devil in the name of the bridge has been preserved.

The Pont du Diable in Olargues was listed as a Monument historique in 1916 .
