The Poona was a general cargo ship operated by the Danish shipping company A / S Det Østasiatiska Kompagni.

description

The ship had five holds , three in front of the superstructures and two behind. There were loading booms for cargo handling between the hatches.

The drive was carried out by a seven-cylinder - Diesel engine manufacturer's MAN (type: K7Z78 / 140A) with 6450 hp power . The engine worked on a propeller . The ship reached a speed of 15  knots .

history

The ship was built in 1952 under the construction number 644 at Deutsche Werft AG in Hamburg . The launching of the ship took place on September 13 1,952th In November of that year it was delivered to the shipping company.

Fire in Gothenburg

On July 15, 1971, the ship was in Gothenburg loading three steel structures . In the hold there were 36 t of sodium chlorate in barrels (100 kg each) and 600 t of rapeseed oil in barrels (200 l each). The steel structures were loaded between the barrels stowed on pallets. A barrel with sodium chlorate and rapeseed oil was damaged during loading, so that some of the contents leaked and mixed in the hold. When, at the end of the loading process, one of the steel structures slipped on the top of the tank, sparks formed which ignited the mixture of sodium chlorate and rapeseed oil. Within a few minutes the flames struck out of the ship's hatch and there were three explosions, which were so violent that the hatch covers were sometimes thrown several hundred meters onto the quay .

Several people were killed or injured in the accident. Different sources report different numbers of victims. Accordingly, three people were killed and six were injured. Elsewhere there is talk of four victims, a seaman and three dock workers . Another source gives two fatalities and several injured.

The fire was fought over four days from the land and water sides. It was only completely erased after ten days. The ship was badly damaged in the fire. On September 3, 1971, it was sold to Sten A. Olsson in Gothenburg for demolition.

While the cause of the fire was the damage to the barrels in one of the loading hatches and the formation of sparks through one of the steel structures to be loaded, the fire could only reach such proportions because sodium chlorate as an oxidizing agent and rapeseed oil as a highly flammable oil had been loaded in a hold.
