Poplar is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 on Aspen Way in the Poplar district .

investment

Poplar is one of the busiest stations, as four of the five DLR sections meet here: to the west towards the Bank and Tower Gateway , south towards Lewisham , east towards Beckton and King George V and north towards Stratford .

On the north side of the station is the DLR control center, from where the fully automatic trains are controlled and monitored, as well as the smaller of the two depots . This is connected to the route by two tracks with a minimum radius of 40 meters; this is the narrowest curve in the entire DLR network.

history

The station opened on August 31, 1987. At first it was very simply equipped and consisted of three tracks and two short platforms, each 30 meters long. Immediately to the west of it, the three sections of the basic network were connected by a simple triangular track. The marked increase in the number of passengers, well above expectations, made it necessary to completely rebuild the station at the beginning of the 1990s while still in operation. Instead of the track triangle, a complex and efficient crossing structure was built, a fourth track was added and the length of the two central platforms was doubled. Finally, on March 28, 1994, the line towards Beckton was opened.

The area north of the West India Docks was already served by railway lines during the heyday of the Docklands . There were two stations called Poplar , but not at the location of today's DLR station:

  • Poplar station on the London and Blackwall Railway was located where Blackwall station is today. It was opened on 1845 and was in operation until May 3, 1926.
  • The station Poplar (East India Road) of the North London Railway was from 1866 to 1944 in operation. It was on East India Dock Road at the location of today's All Saints station .

From December 2018, there will be a direct transfer to Canary Wharf station on the Abbey Wood branch of the Elizabeth Line ( Crossrail ).
