Porfi Jiménez
Porfirio Antonio Jiménez Núñez (born February 16, 1928 in Hato Mayor del Rey , † June 8, 2010 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan composer , arranger and bandleader of Dominican origin.
Jiménez began his musical training at the age of seven with Pedro Albuerme at the music academy in his hometown and, when he was thirteen, played the trumpet in the orchestra of Hato Mayor. After studying at the Municipal Music Academy, he became a member of the Orquesta Angelita at the radio station Voz Dominicana . He was introduced to the art of arranging by its director Enrico Cabiatti .
In 1954 Rafael Minaya invited him to tour with his orchestra in Venezuela. After the dissolution of this orchestra he became a member of the orchestra of Pedro J. Belisario and after three years a member of the ensemble directed by Billo Frómeta at Radio Caracas TV . A year later he moved to the Orchestra of Venevisión , while at the same time studying at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and working as an arranger and producer for the Velvet label .
After the orchestra of Venevisión was disbanded in 1963, Jiménez founded his own orchestra, which over time has become known throughout Latin America as one of the most important musical groups in Venezuela. Titles such as A bailar con Porfi (with Chico Salas and Kiko Mendive ), O La Negra Celina , La Resbalosa and La Banda está borracha became famous . Jiménez received several music awards in Venezuela and the sales success brought him two gold records and one platinum record.
