The Porphyridiales are an order of the red algae . They are single-celled organisms , but often form thread-like colonies that are held together by their slimy, gelatinous shells. The order currently (July 2018) comprises 15 species, including the purple alga .

The order Porphyridiales was established in 1937 by Johan Harald Kylin . It is divided into two families :
