Port-de-Paix is a port city and the capital in the Nord-Ouest department in northern Haiti . It is located on Les Trois Rivières, as well as on the Canal de la Totue opposite the island of Île de la Tortue , at a height of 36 meters above sea level. In Port-de-Paix, road 150 joins road 152.
In addition to the port and the airport, there are four schools, a college, a cathedral, three other churches and a hospital in Port-de-Paix. The Lower Bergisch town of Erkrath maintains sponsorship relationships with the town of Port-de-Paix.
history
Christopher Columbus discovered Hispaniola on December 5, 1492 and, searching for gold deposits, found the ports of Port-de-Paix (then Valparaiso), Baid'Acal (then Thomas), Point Picolet (then Punta Santa).
The city was founded in 1665 by French flibos who had been driven from the island of Tortue by the British . In 1679 there was a slave revolt . For some time the place was the capital of the colony .
During the period of Spanish and French rule, Napoleon Bonaparte sent General Charles Victoire Emmanuel Leclerc with 25,000 men to Haiti in 1801 , where he arrived in February 1802. The general now set out to conquer Port-de-Paix as a base of operations from Le Cap , which he succeeded on February 9, 1802.
In 1902 the city was almost completely destroyed in a major fire.
During the 2004 revolution , insurgents captured the port city on February 24th. This resulted in looting and fires. In 2008 Port-de-Paix was flooded by a hurricane.
In an earthquake in October 2018 , nine people were killed and 200 injured. Many buildings were destroyed or damaged.
