The earthquake in Haiti in 2018 occurred on the evening of October 6, 2018 at 8:11 pm local time and had a magnitude of 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale . The epicenter was 21 kilometers west-northwest of Port-de-Paix with a focus depth of about 15 kilometers.

Victims and damage

The earthquake killed 18 people, nine in Port-de-Paix, seven in Gros-Morne and one in Saint-Louis-du-Nord . 548 people were injured. Over 55,000 people need humanitarian aid .

Buildings collapsed in several locations in northern Haiti and many buildings were damaged. According to government reports, 2,102 buildings were destroyed and 11,134 damaged, including 70 schools. A hospital in Port-de-Paix was badly damaged. A hospital in the Gros-Morne arrondissement , the police station in Port-de-Paix and a church in the village of Plaisance were also damaged. Buildings were also damaged on the Île de la Tortue and in the village of Chansolme . In Pilate , the drinking water supply was impaired by damage to the infrastructure.

Thousands of people spent the nights outdoors for fear of aftershocks.

The quake could also be felt in the capital Port-au-Prince and in parts of the neighboring states of Dominican Republic and Cuba .

20 hours after the quake, there was an aftershock of magnitude M w 5.2.

International aid

UN Secretary General António Guterres offered the country the support of the UN . OCHA took on the planning and coordination of international aid with the national agencies . The UNICEF provides assistance on site.

Cuba, which has been providing medical assistance in the country for 20 years, has added two mobile surgical teams to its medical team in Port-de-Paix and Gros-Morne. The NGO Food for the Poor from Florida sent relief supplies such as kerosene stoves, canned food, blankets, tarpaulins and torches. The Pan American Health Organization also provides medical disaster relief.
