Port Perry is a town in the Durham Region , in the Canadian province of Ontario . The place is located southeast of Uxbridge and southwest of Peterborough . Port Perry is about an hour northeast of Toronto . In 2010 the number of inhabitants was 9,500.

history

The first settlers came mainly from Great Britain, including the loyalist Reuben Crandell, who built a house there with his wife in May 1821. The listed building can be visited. It is located on King Street between Prince Albert and Manchester. In November 1821, Lucy Ann Crandell gave birth to their first child on Canadian soil. In 1831 Ruben Crandell and his family moved to another house known as Crandell's Corners (later also Borelia).

A group of business people planned in 1867 to connect the parish to a rail network so that Port Whitby and Port Perry could be reached by train. The first train reached Port Perry in 1872. Goods from northern Ontario were brought to Port Perry via the Trent-Severn sea route and loaded onto freight trains and transported on.

Culture and recreation

Port Perry is very popular as a tourist city due to the beautiful old town. There are tons of clothing stores, cafes, restaurants, galleries and antique shops. Every summer there are many different festivities in Port Perry which attract many tourists and residents from the surrounding communities. The festivities are called: Mississauga First Nation Pow Wow, the Highland Games, the Dragon Boat Races and the StreetFest. This has taken place annually on Labor Day weekend for over 150 years.

Port Perry also has several public and private golf courses. The Great Blue Heron Charity Casino is also located in the city. In the summer, river trips with Scugog Island Cruises can be taken, which serve various attraction destinations. In summer, tourists can pick their own fruit such as strawberries and apples; In winter, anglers like to come to the lake for ice fishing and snowmobilers.

Film productions

Over the years, Port Perry has become a popular location for film producers. The parish was used as the location for the film Amy and the Wild Geese . It also served as a double for Maine in the US film Welcome to Mooseport from 2004. Furthermore, all six seasons of the US series The West Wing - In the Center of Power were filmed there. The film Killshot was filmed there in 2009 and a Burger King commercial in 2010 . The Netflix series Hemlock Grove is also set in Port Perry.

Personalities

  • Daniel David Palmer (1845–1913), the inventor of chiropractic , spent his childhood in Port Perry.
  • John Ross Roach (1900–1973), ice hockey player
  • Craig Russell (1948–1990), actor. He was born here in 1948 and lived in Port Perry his entire life until he passed away in 1990. He is buried in the local cemetery under his name Russell Craig Edie.
