Port Renfrew is a Canadian settlement (unincorporated place) on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia . It is located on Juan de Fuca Road , about a two-hour drive northwest of the provincial capital Victoria at the end of Highway 14 . Since the 2006 census, 33.2% of the residents have left the settlement, so that at the 2011 census only 139 residents lived in the municipality.

history

Originally the community was called Port San Juan (named after the western US American islands San Juan Islands ), but was renamed Port Renfrew in 1895 in honor of Lord Renfrew.

tourism

The community is located at the southern end of the trail West Coast Trail (in German: West Coast Path ), which was built in 1907 to recover to shipwrecked sailors. Today the community is the starting or ending point for hikes on this trail. The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail begins and ends nearby .

The community offers good conditions for canoeing .
