Hans-Herman called

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Herman Rief (born March 11, 1909 in Hennstedt (Dithmarschen) , † August 17, 2009 ) was a German art historian , curator and specialist author as well as archivist and collector . It was considered the "memory" of the Lower Saxon artist village Worpswede .

Live and act

Hans-Herman Rief was born as the eldest son on a farm in Dithmarschen . He started collecting pictures and books as a schoolboy. He learned some French from a Belgian prisoner of war who had to do forced labor on his parents' farm . After finishing school in Heath , he studied art history at the University in Kiel and worked as an art historian in Kiel Thaulow Museum . During a visit to the Hamburger Kunsthalle , he was enthusiastic about Paula Modersohn-Becker's pictures and in 1936 he rode his bike from Kiel to Worpswede, where he met Clara Rilke . Until the end of the war, he visited the artist's place near Bremen more often . He always stayed as a guest in Haus im Schluh and made friends with the owner Martha Vogeler , the first wife of the Art Nouveau artist Heinrich Vogeler , who had lived there with her three daughters Marieluise, Bettina, since the early 1920s after separating from her husband. Martha and her friend Ludwig Bäumer lived.

In 1945/1946 Rief moved to Worpswede, where he lived until his death in the building ensemble Haus im Schluh , which still today consists of three thatched buildings: Martha Vogeler's house, a former moor cottage; hand weaving, daughter Bettina's work area; and the smallest house, the guest house. Martha Vogeler had asked him to systematically organize and expand her collection on the local art history as the “Worpsweder Archive”.

Rief had a soft spot for France all his life . On his first trip to Paris in 1950 he made the acquaintance of Jean Cocteau and made friends with Bram van Velde and Max Ernst . From 1953 he made regular visits to Paris and his friendships there resulted in renowned art exhibitions in Worpswede as early as the 1950s. For example, Friedrich Netzel's first Max Ernst exhibition in Germany after 1945 took place in the Worpsweder Kunsthalle . Rief supported Netzel, with whom he traveled to France and Prague , for many years as a curator at exhibitions in his art gallery. In the 1950s, Rief also made friends in Hamburg with the writers Hubert Fichte and Hans Henny Jahnn .

In addition to the “Worpsweder Archive”, Rief also set up the “Heinrich Vogeler Collection” and the “Schluh Archive” in Haus im Schluh . In addition, he worked out the extensive graphic catalog raisonné by Heinrich Vogeler, which he published for the first time in 1974 , published several books and exhibition catalogs on Worpswede's artists and was involved in numerous similar books. He also worked as a translator.

In 1981 he brought the “Worpsweder Archive” founded by Martha Vogeler and built up by him into the Barkenhoff Worpswede Foundation . Heinrich Vogeler's graphic catalog raisonné was revised and updated several times and appeared in several new editions.

Until shortly before his hundredth birthday, Hans-Hermann Rief worked daily in the Museum Haus im Schluh , where, among other things, he provided visitors with information about Worpswede's art history and the former Worpswede artists' colony .

Rief's private collections

Rief started an important private collection of perfume bottles together with Axel Winckler, which was exhibited by Friedrich Netzel in 1999 in the Worpsweder Kunsthalle . The main focus of the collection are bottles from Guerlain and Caron. An extensive, illustrated exhibition catalog was published for the exhibition. In 1988 and 1989 the flacons were exhibited in 10 branches of the Dresdner Bank in Hesse, and in 1990 at the Frankfurt fair "Premiere 90". He also collected posters designed by French artists from the Fernand Mourlot printing workshop in Paris. For example, Rief's extensive poster art collection, which includes posters by artists such as Georges Braque , Jean Cocteau , Marc Chagall , Le Corbusier , Fernand Léger , Henri Matisse , Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso , was publicly exhibited in the Haus im Schluh in 2006 .
