Scheme of the portal Tombarten

The Tomb Gwern Einion portal is next to an abandoned farmhouse not far from the River Artro , southeast of the Llanfair slate caverns , near Harlech in Gwynedd , Wales . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

The unexcavated Gwern Einion is a typical Welsh portal tomb . The system integrated into a wall, the chamber of which was used as a shed for a long time, consisted of five stones. The wall was recently cleared by archaeologists, so that the monument is almost original again. The Cairn has been completely removed prior periods to close drywall to build. The capstone, which is not in its original position, rests on two 1.8 m (unusually) high portal stones and drops off steeply towards the 0.9 m high end stone. Only the side stone in the south is in situ . There are many small outcrops in the vicinity, but land consolidation has changed the area.

There are other Neolithic megalithic sites in this area including Bron y Foel Isaf , Cors y Gedol, and Dyffryn Ardudwy and Meini Hirion .
