Porte Stanislas in Nancy

The Porte Stanislas is a city gate in Nancy in France .

The monumental gate was commissioned in 1761 by Duke Stanislaus I Leszczyński in honor of his patron saint, Saint Stanislaus of Krakow . The architect Richard Mique designed a triumphal arch modeled on the Arch of Constantine in Rome as the western end of the great west-east axis (Rue Stanislas) on the border between the old and new town, replacing an arch originally built by Emmanuel Héré (see also Arc Héré ). The arch was built in the Doric style. The attic is decorated with bas-reliefs, statues extend the vertical of the columns.

During the French Revolution , the gate was briefly called Porte de la Montagne , as can still be read on an inscription on the attic. The Porte Stanislas is since January 15, 1925 listed . It was restored at the end of 2009.
