The Zamirchor e. V. (Hebrew: הזמיר Zamir "nightingale") is a mixed choir from Bayreuth in Upper Franconia , whose aim is to contribute culturally integrative to international understanding on a regional and international level .
Foundation and background
The opera singer and vocal teacher Barbara Baier from Bayreuth met the Israeli-Jewish pianist and conductor Itzhak Tavior by chance in Switzerland. Joint concerts and recitals followed - in Switzerland, he didn't want to go to “the land of nazis”.
The artistic collaboration motivated Tavior to set texts from the Old Testament to music. His first two works were created: the cantata “Shma Israel”, Hear Israel, the Eternal is our God, the Eternal is unique (this is the text of the Jewish prayer that believers pray several times a day) and the symphonic poem “The Vision of the Dry Bones ”, The raising of the people according to the book of the prophet Ezekiel . The two artists began to present the works, intended for soloists, choir and orchestra, to the audience in miniature versions with vocals and piano.
Back in Bayreuth, Barbara Baier organized a project choir made up of her pupils and students - the origin of the Zamirchor.
The works were completely rehearsed in Hebrew, and Itzhak Tavior was invited to come to Germany to perform his works on the piano together with the project choir. The only performance date that was possible for everyone happened to happen on Holocaust Remembrance Day, back in May 2005. Because of the too sensitive date, Tavior interviewed some rabbis in his home country who encouraged him to go.
For the first time a Holocaust Remembrance Day was celebrated in Bayreuth, together with Jews and Christians, Israelis and Germans.
In the same year, a “come together” took place at the University of Bayreuth , a conference whose initiators included Barbars Baier, Pastor Peter Hirschberg as a speaker and the Israeli, Arab-Jewish journalist Daniel Dagan , who gave a lecture on the subject of Israeli-Palestinian Conflict held. On this occasion, the project choir sang other Hebrew compositions by Itzhak Tavior.
In April 2006 the Zamirchor e. V. officially founded. Since then, the choir has seen its task under the aspect of international understanding in intensifying relations between Germans and Israelis as well as Jews and Christians. In addition to regional activities, he organizes joint musical projects with Israeli choirs, also on an international level.
Act
The repertoire ranges from the baroque to the modern and is regularly enriched by (premier) performances of works by Itzhak Tavior. In 2009 the choir sang at the Bayreuth premiere of the semi-opera Wilhelmine - Love is just a fantasy by the composer Hans Martin Gräbner on the anniversary year of Wilhelmine von Bayreuth .
So it started
The concerts on the occasion of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel in 2008 in the Bayreuth City Hall with the Hof Symphony Orchestra and in the Nuremberg State Theater with the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra led in 2010 to the invitation of the choir to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in front of the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City . It was a historic concert: for the first time Germany and Israel took part singing together at this location. Conduct conducted; at another concert in New York in the Park East Synagogue he was at the piano. Due to the audio video in Bayreuth in 2008 with his composition The Vision of the Dry Bones (see above), Tavior received the Zionist Prize from the Ministry of Culture of the State of Israel.
