The Possehlstraße is a street in Lübeck.

location

The approximately 1.65 kilometer long Possehlstrasse begins at Berliner Platz and runs in a northerly direction, initially crossing the Elbe-Lübeck Canal on the Possehlbrücke and then the connection between Trave and Stadtgraben on the Wallbrücke . It ends near the Holstentor at the intersection with Holstentorplatz , Puppenbrücke and Willy-Brandt-Allee .

The southern part of Possehlstrasse from Berliner Platz to Possehlbrücke, which is 460 meters shorter, is in the St. Jürgen district , while the northern section to Holstentorplatz is part of the old town .

history

The unusual history of the origins of the street is still reflected in its course today, as it is dead straight except for the last 200 meters before Holstentorplatz, where it swings slightly to the west: It was built on the former embankment of the Lübeck-Büchener railway , the tracks of which led to the old main station in front of the Holsten Gate until 1908 . The Lübeck railway gate, built in 1850, was on the route . After the completion of the new station and the dismantling of the railway systems, the embankment remained unused for over a decade until it was converted into a street in 1920.

In memory of the senator, entrepreneur and patron Emil Possehl , who died the previous year , the Senate added the name "Possehlstraße" to the street area of the old railway embankment , Holstentor - Geniner Straße , on February 4, 1920; however, the name was finally officially established six years later.

In 1956, Possehlstrasse was expanded and since then it has been an important connecting road for car traffic within Lübeck. Between the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and Berliner Platz , it is part of the federal highways 75 and 207 .

The Possehl Bridge crosses the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and was built in 1956 as part of the road expansion. From 2015 to October 30, 2019, the bridge was replaced by a new building due to ailing building structure, the completion of which was repeatedly delayed.
